This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

photos of Skippy
Another nice day. I brought my camera on our afternoon walk and took a bunch of pictures of Skippy. He even looked up at me for some of them...
The big Saint Bernard Skippy met is Lola. Her blog is here. I read a bit about how her owner rescued her (here). Its always fun to meet other bloggers out there.

He is so lovely I adore him. Nothing like a dog I say, just don't tell me cats lol.
Skippy keeps wishing he could get close to a cat. They all seem to run away though...
Skippy looks like he's having a very good time in those pictures! He is a very handsome dog!
How cute! Thanks for the picture of Lola! She looks great! She's having surgery on April 3rd, unfortunately. She has elbow displasia in both elbows, poor thing.
I love Skippy. Isn't it funny how our dogs become so important to us.
That Skippy is a handsome hound!
My mother breeds Irish Water Spaniels, and there is a conviction in Water Spaniel circles that the Portuguese Water Dog is very, very similar.
Well, I must admit I can't see it. For starters, Skippy is black, and he has a face more like a large highland terrier than a water spaniel. Unless he's untypical of the breed?
Have you heard anything about the supposed similarity?
I've never seen an Irish Water Spaniel in person, but from pictures, they look VERY much like Portuguese water dogs to me. Just bigger, and with a different clip and color.
The "terrier" face is just the way Skippy is clipped. Here are photos of Skippy's Mom, Clio, clipped in a traditional lion clip, with a clean shaven face. Skippy looks very much like her, but we give him a retriever clip.
Of course the color is different, but I have seen brown PWDs, too. I'd definitely go along with the idea that they are closely related breeds.
Skippy is very typical of the breed. (His cousin was at Westminster last year). Skippy's a little bit on the tall side. A bit of a "strong" (long) nose. And his fur is straighter and more velvety than most wavy Porties.
Wow... Clio DOES look like a Water Spaniel. Thanks, Kathy, that's fascinating!
