This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

pickles!!
My first try at making pickles! They are yummy. I made the recipe called Famous Back Eddy House Pickles from the book Quick Pickles by Chris Schlesinger and others. This book has lots of similar recipes and I'm hoping to try more of them soon. I like pickle recipes that use a mix of vegetables, in addition to cucumbers. I added beets (striped Chiogga's) to the recipe, which darkened my brine.

We are lucky enough to frequent The Back Eddy, and their tasty pickles. I hope you enjoy them, what a colorful mix!
Beautiful.
My family has a recipe that uses a variety of vegetables also. I will have to try adding the beets next time.
I love the Back Eddy. Haven't been there in years though. The pickles look delicious!
Pickle looks sooo delicious.
We made some Korean Kimchi pickle with our napa cabbage.
Many small farmers in Southern Ontario are serious about pickling as an added value to their produce.
We are hoping to do more pickling next year.
Beautiful and so yummy looking!
I like the wooden fork`s im going to buy some for my Thanksgiving party.
Donald, They are bamboo picks that I got at Crate and Barrel a few month ago. The most similar item I see there now are plastic picks: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/outlet/drinkware-bar-accessories/set-of-150-party-picks/s601163
You sure are planning ahead. I'm lucky if I get my planning done for tomorrow before it happens!
Im in Hamilton Ontario Canada so our Thanksgiving is in October. I try to keep the dinner simple start cooking at 12 finish around 3.30 guest arive about 4 dinner at five. This year a 17 dollar turkey from Walmart. roast potatoes, Carrots, stuffing, cranberry sauce buns and pan gravy. Orangina pop & Tomatoe juice. Cheese and crackers with those toothpicks for the pre-meal, and desert cake and cookies. Its no fun being in the spending the whole day in the kitchen get everthing done before the people arrive.
The pickles in look wonderful, the color alone makes you want to open them and have a taste. They definitely look yummy.
Look at the colours in that! Absolutely divine!
