This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.
All those seedlings, just wonderful! I am just starting to get things underway. Couple weeks and cool season crops can start visiting the coldframe. I had some celeriac sprouts come up a few days ago. Looks like I will have more then enough seedlings, thanks for the seed.
Dan I planted lots of celeriac seeds and have only 3 sprouts so far. I'd like to have 8-10. They come up slowly. I'm glad you have enough. I hope more come up soon or I'll plant more.
I love your setup. I may have to copy your shelving/lights :) Certainly more space saving than my current setup, but I'm not sure my lights would fit on that shelving unit. Great idea.
Do you transplant any of your seedlings into larger interim containers before they go outside? I have some lettuce seedlings that are outgrowing the light box and I'm not sure what to do about it.
Yes, I often have to move seedlings to bigger containers before planting out. This can get to be a lot of work. But if they outgrow the small container, that's what you have to do.
Its still pretty early to transplant out, around here anyway. For lettuce, you may want to get a large pot and space the plants well and just try it as a mostly indoor crop. Once its over 50*F you could put this big pot outside in the daytime. (In Boston, we're rarely exceeding 40* still.)
I've been meaning to try lettuce inside under lights in the winter to see if I can grow edible heads.

Your blog is very nice. Maybe it helps us.. We start a vegetable garden at school, children plant and take care diferent kinds of vegetables.

So lovely, fragile and full of promise! What gorgeous trays...you've inspired me to get sprouting myself.
What type of lights do you use? Can I just use any flourscent Lights? Thank you
