This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

Its a cool, rainy day. And we're looking forward to a cool, rainy week ahead. I'm watching for lettuce and pea sprouts, but none are up yet. The soil temperature at the warm end of my garden is 46F now. A good temperature for the peas and lettuce.

Our climate may be warmer than yours, but I could never do that with a seed packet. We have so much wind that if I tried that, within a day it would lost and blown far, far away. We regularly have wind storms that blow tiles off of roofs, and do other damage. Almost every year I lose at least a few plants to wind damage.
Wow, blown away plants. I guess that's something I like about our backyard veggie garden, it's sheltered compared to our more south facing front garden. Mostly we have to worry about early and late frosts here and heavy snow cover.
We have a brisk wind today of about 10 mph (not much). Its supposed to be a big Nor'easter, but in my sheltered yard, not many branches even move much. Wind would be a whole new thing to worry about.
Good point... I'm glad you mentioned it, because I have been wanting to plant peas and lettuce and forgot. It would be a great week to do that here, too.
