This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

willow catkins are opening
You have to search around a bit and look close, but some of the pussy willow buds are opening. Don't know if its fair to call these a sign of spring.
The willow buds opening is a real spring teaser here in Alaska. Sometimes they will open in unseasonably warm winter weather and trick us all that spring is around the corner. Hope your buds mean the real deal!
How crazy are we that we are excited by this? I am laughing because it is so great to see and yet it si such a tiny thing. I planted one in the Fall (Western CT) so I will make a point to go and check it. Last year I forced forsythia and cherry indoors to get a feeling of spring early. Maybe I can do that with the PW as well?
I have a feeling that they probably bloom whenever they feel like it, but we tend to notice them in the spring because it's warmer and we're outside. But pussy willows have always been one of my favorite signs of spring.
Love them. Remind me of my childhood hiatus in Mass. We lived in Newton for three years. Funny, I remember plants a lot from then: pussy willow, apple tree, dogwood tree, forsythia.

I think the pussy willows are about the same as Forsythia blooming in the spring. It can bloom in December, January, February or March.
I would take anything I can get this time of year :-) March will be here soon though and we will have at least a bit of spring.
I've always heard of these trees but I've never seen one. Not sure if they grow down south. I'll Google it. lol
