This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

the ground has thawed!!!!
On a whim, I brought my fork out to see how frozen the garden was. But, NO ICE! The soil is beautiful and very workable. I'm amazed. Maybe all of our snow cover kept the ground from freezing hard this year. Last year, it was frozen solid in mid March and I couldn't do anything until early April. Well, now I'm starting to think about pea seeds.... Hhmmm. Just a row or two. Planting peas by St Patrick's Day would be great.

I found that my ground has mostly thawed, too. I was digging in it and got into a low area that seemed hard as a rock... it was still frozen. But it is encouraging, always, to be able to dig in March. Time to plant peas!

Surprisingly our soil is thawed and not muddy either. Today as I was clearing away the winter debris I was tempted to dig up some of the volunteers and begin to pot them up. Unfortunately I also found a tree came down on my potting bench so I guess it will be a while before I pot up anything.
I think spring is pretty much here and its caught me off guard. Time to start cleaning up and planting, even up here in the North.
Speaking of peas, mine are now about two inches or so high, with several leaves. Definitely looking like little baby pea plants!
Yippee for baby peas! Grow, grow, grow. I'll try to plant a row or two this week. I turned my soil yesterday and it looks beautiful. Very early for me!
I did notice that most of my raised beds are still frozen today. I didn't check them before. They are shaded by the adjacent house all winter. Maybe the raising keeps them cooler in the winter too? I'm glad I have my new space next to the house, which is sunny all winter and beautifully warm now. Today I planted a first batch of peas!
