This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. But Skippy always stood by me and was a great friend. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps and garden with me. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees and berry bushes, chickens and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

today's harvest

harvest - lettuce IMG_6111 I'm tallying the proportion of my family's vegetables that I grow myself. I'm doing it by weight - this is just over 0.5 lb of lettuce. I don't think the lettuce is really worth keeping track of, but I'll add it in anyway. I picked a half lb of small peppers yesterday to add too.

Garden grown: 222 lbs - Store bought: 98 lbs
Proportion of home grown: still 69%

That's a really interesting idea. As we get started with a community garden at our new place, it would be interesting to see our balance. We'll never be at your scale, but it's an interesting metric; maybe we look at proportion grown vs. bought for just the items we grow in our little plot.
ps - love the pics of Suzie and Charlie; it looks like Suzie's happy to have a new sibling.
