our seed swap was wonderful!

We had a really nice crowd of gardeners that came to our Seed Swap last Sunday. I loved the event. Thanks to everyone who came by. We had lots of seed changing hands. And everyone had fun. Victoria put together a super seed planting demo. I couldn't even get a photo of it with the people always crowded around her table. Thanks Victoria, and everyone else. I think this will be a fun event to expand on and do annually. I'll book mark here Mr Brown Thumb's very helpful article on How To Organize Seed Swap.

Remember to come by our Seed Swap tomorrow at the Belmont MA Library, Assembly Room, if you're in the area. It's 3:00 to 4:30 pm, sponsored by our community garden, the Belmont Victory Gardens. We hope to have a lot of seeds to share and gardeners to meet. We have a seed planting demo and some planting info. Open to everyone. Bring fresh seeds to share if you can.

Get ready for spring planting! Seed swap is open to all gardeners – whether you are a member of a community garden, grow vegetables or flowers in your yard, or would like to try sowing seeds for the first time.

Bring fresh vegetable or flower seeds to share and go home with new varieties to try. Heirlooms are great but purchased hybrid seeds are also welcome. Divide seeds into labelled, sharing-sized envelopes before your arrive to save time. Most store-bought seed packs can be divided into 2 or 3 "swap-sized" packets.

Please come even if you don't have seeds to share. There will be seeds and conversation to share with everyone. Belmont Victory Gardeners will be on hand to provide sowing tips and answer questions. Come visit with new and experienced gardeners and start dreaming of spring!

harvest celebration plans

I posted a new sign on my gate today. (My son says no one will ever read all that.) But maybe they'll read the free food part.

I'm really excited that Gretta Anderson, a farmer from Shared Harvest CSA, will come a speak. Her topic will be "Late Blight: Sharing the collective experience of local organic growers this summer". I can't wait to hear what she has to say. (I may FliP and post it, if she doesn't mind.)

I got a fantastic box of free seeds in the mail today. From Botanical Interests. Out-of-date seeds. Beautiful packages. They donated 65 packages of all different types. I'll hand them out to everyone and they can swap if they want.

I heard rumors that gardeners are saving big zucchinis for the giant vegetable contest! I wonder how big a zucchini can get? I'm hoping my big pumpkin will win. I thought I had a good chance until this afternoon I spotted a really big pumpkin in a nearby plot - much bigger than mine. Oh well.

Belmont Victory Gardens Harvest Celebration: Seed Swap & Giant Vegetable Contest

Where: The Event will take place at the Belmont Victory Gardens, (next to Rock Meadow, Mill Street, Belmont MA) on Saturday October 3rd 2009 from 2pm-4pm.

The Seed & Plant Swap offers a chance to share divisions of your raspberries, rhubarb, day lilies, and other perennials. Also seeds you have collected or bought, new or out-of-date. Seeds for vegetables, herbs, ornamentals, annuals, and perennials. The swap provides access to FREE stuff while helping to support local food growing. Join us as the season ends and you begin planning for next year's garden. Avoid wasting what you can't use. One person's surplus is another person's windfall.

We hope the Swap will be lively and full of surprises as neighbors share growing tips as well as seeds and plants. Trade seed packets, plants, bulbs, and divisions, one-for-one.

Bring: Perennial flower divisions, raspberry and rhubarb divisions, bulbs and tubers like garlic and dahlias. Any type of seeds, including packets or hand collected, flowers or vegetables, annuals or perennials.

Also bring your biggest homegrown vegetable for the Giant Vegetable Contest. A prize will be given for the biggest!
