farewell the non-organic AdSense

OK, looks likes it's time to shut down AdSense on my side bar. I opened up my blog tonight and saw an advertisement advocating the use of Round-up to kill weeds before laying down mulch. That's not even semi organic or half sustainable.

Its a lazy gardening approach that could result in poison run off into wetlands, accumulation in soils, and, frankly, costs more than just mulching properly. I mean, its really easy to lay newspaper or cardboard as a barrier under mulch if you want to eliminate weeds. Today I laid a thick layer of salt marsh hay in my garden paths - this will stop most weeds. I'll probably need to pull a few weeds now and then (on a bright sunny morning with the birds singing...maybe I'll find some dill or borage "weeds" that I'll transplant, weeding is half the fun of gardening...)

It's too bad to shut down AdSense as I liked the panels of garden-related (thought sometimes distantly related, or not related) topics on the ad bar. They added some extra color and variety to the format I thought. ...Hormel cheese dip, potting soil and landscaping services.... And the content changes regularly with almost no work for me. But, they aren't organic. Oh well. Goodbye AdSense. It will take me some time to remove and replace.

tag cloud advice

Can anyone point me to code for old Blogger templates to insert a tag cloud into my sidebar? I've been looking for this forever.

computer colors

I am editing my blog template because of my new computer (a Sony Vaio). The colors are so much brighter. I was complaining about this at first, but it seems the problem may have been that my old computer was getting dull. In any case, the whites looks much better on my new computer than the green background, which was so bright I couldn't see the pictures.

Another problem I'm having is with installing PhotoShop. After 17 tries, I guess I need to call for help. So I'll post unedited photos until its installed.

It was time to replace my nice old computer. Its a big project to transfer everything. The email, the files, and then all the programs. And I'm trying to get the same color settings. I have to get used to slightly different spacing of the keys. And a different touch pad. It may take me some time. I wish there was an easier way.

countdown code

I spent so much time making that little line in my sidebar that counts down the number of days until planting time that I wanted to make the code available to anyone else who wants to use it. It can be modified to other plant hardiness zones or your birthday or whatever. My husband says I spent an hour and a half (!) getting this to look good on my site. (Also 2 glasses of wine). Anyway..\.. the code is here. I don't know if it works on every blog template. Help yourself, I hope it counts the right way for you. (By the way, I wrote this by modifying the code at this site.)
