I've seen some wonderful birds this week. American Woodcock, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Eastern Bluebird and the first Baltimore Orioles were at the garden this week.
The woodcock was a real treat. I saw this bird at dusk, just as we finished assigning the last plots at 8:30 last week. He settled down in the mowed grass, looking like a misplaced shorebird the size of a robin. Too bad I didn't have my camera with me, but don;t know if I could have gotten a good shot anyway. (next time....)

Never seen one of those before.
When my parents started dating in the seventies, one of their economical dates was watching woodcocks do their mating show.
Quite a site they've told me. :)
I've seen orioles in our yard lately. Hope they decide to nest here again. We had our first salad from our garden last night. I was so excited I did a blog post. Woo hoo!

Very nice capture. Excellent bird.
Our screen door is broken so it kind of flaps in the wind. Upon going on a run, I saw birds nesting on a wreath hanging on my front door!!! Incredible!!! Love your pics!!! Aren't birds lovely?!!
Neat! And here I'm getting excited by cardinals and blue jays.
I love your garden you make it seem so effortless. I will love to visit your garden and learn from you please. Florence
That is a cool bird, never seen one of them before. We get Grosbeaks at our feeders every spring & summer. They are interesting to watch.
Oh the woodcocks are just the greatest. I've discovered two of them doin' their thang in different areas of the campus I live on. It's hard not to laugh when they start doing their peent call, they look so ridiculous. I took my sweetie on a date to watch one of them and she got as much of a kick out of them as I did. If yours wasn't making noise and displaying, it could be a female with a nest nearby...
Great blog, btw! As a beginner gardener, I've picked up some great hints from you!
