This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

garden toad
I think this is why the slug damage isn't so bad in my garden any more. Toads eat lots of bugs, slugs and snails. This big guy has been hanging out under my squash vines.
I counted at least five of them, when moving some concrete slats around the other day. Another one seems to be living in the compost bin. Didn't stop the slugs from eating all my basil though.
I so wish toads and frogs would visit my garden .. can I rent your little guy for a while please ? cheap rates I hope ? LOL Seriously ... I could really use that natural help !
What a handsome fella! I have them in my foundation plantings but none seemed to like my veggie garden this year. I am thinking a toad house may be in my future.

BTW, This is the first toad I've seen in my gardens. I feel very lucky. But I don't know how one attracts them. He's also the biggest toad I've ever seen. Maybe 4 inches long or so.
As I was weeding yesterday, I found one living under my overgrown Chinese cabbage. I almost didn't want to pull up the cabbage for fear of removing his hiding spot, but that fear didn't last. He soon found his shelter under my cuke vines and squash.
