This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

Hi Kathy! Thanks for the great blog. My fiance and I moved to an apartment with a yard last summer and planted a small vegetable garden, but plan to get really serious this year. It's our first garden, so we've been trying to read up and learn a lot before we get started. Your blog is such a big help! We actually live right across Fresh Pond from Belmont, on the Cambridge side, so your posts on planting schedules and what plants do well in this area are super helpful. Aunt Kathy in Montague said it was -15 last night....yikes! But hey, it's going to be 25 degrees with a 17 degree wind chill tonight in Ocala, FL......that's cold for us! Don't you feel bad for us?

Yes, reading about your garden and your plans has helped me sort out so much as to my own possibilities, especially since I am in CT and have a bit of the same climate. I miss kale, mine has died. What do you do to keep yours going? Mine sort of curled up on itself into a head and the tops all went purple (its a green curly kale)
I just found your blog today, and would love a post on how to get started gardening. We have a 5 month old, and I would love ideas on how to get started with some basics in the Spring. And, does Kale grow in the winter? We live in Madison, Wisconsin....and have harsh winters, it was -21 here the other night.

About the kale. I haven't checked mine in about 3 days. Just before the really cold weather, I went out and picked some and made yummy kale soup. It was fantastic. I started the kale from seed last March, indoors. I don't pick it much until the first frost. Its a very pretty plant all summer in the garden.
In previous years the bitter cold will kill the plants. Below 10 degrees F. I mulched heavy with salt marsh hay this fall and I'm hoping the deep snow cover it keeping it warmer too out there. I'll go out and check on it later today. Its 9*F here now. Brrr.
Indeed!! A great help, and provides lots of inspiration and ideas.And sometimes provokes mild jealousy ... I love kale, it's my all time winter favorite, and just having received my allotment two weeks or so ago, I will have to wait almost a full year before being able to pick mine.
Hi Kathy. Love your site!! Last year I planted my first garden and the results were dismal. It was probably due to the damp rainy spring (I live in southern CT). I also didn't have a layout/plan for my garden; I forgot where I planted what. So, this year, I was surfing around the web to find something that would let me draw out my garden spaces to size. There were 2 sites I found but they were "trial" (30 days free) sites/programs. I came across something from Google (Gotta LOVE Google!! lol); it's called "Google Sketchup". It's so bad-ass!! It's in 3-D. There are video tutorials on "How To" use the FREE software, I watched a few but made my layouts by trial and error. This software is so cool! I recommend Google Sketchup to everyone.

Tyra, I will remembered that! I'm sure you're right. Always good for me to hear a reminder. I think you have less sunlight than us, but milder temps. The darkness must be tough.
