This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

nine ears of Calico popcorn
I was thinking my popcorn was a complete failure, but no, 9 pretty ears. Yippee! I planted it late and then didn't water and lost most of the seedlings. I only had one row that grew well. With one row, I was surprised to get any pollination. I harvested today, even though the ears weren't fully dried on the stalks as it looked like a chipmunk started nibbling on an ear.

i love, love, love these! so pretty! between the blue jays, corn ear worms, and raccoons, i gave up on corn a long time ago. this might convince me to try again.
I think all those critters just haven't found my corn patch yet. I'm SURE they will. This is my second year growing popcorn here. Last year was a super harvest. In my harvests at my previous gardens and other gardener's corn at my community garden there is always a fight to escape the birds, worms and raccoons. If you haven't tried in a while, maybe they've forgotten about you.
