This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

the juncoes are here
I always watch for the first junco in my back yard. A sign of winter.... I had a cute first pair at my little pond today. They usually stay til the weather warms (maybe April?).
My first junco two years ago: Dec 5, 2009.

I like the juncos too. I saw them here last month already. Your photos of them are great!
I'm looking for juncos, too, but haven't seen them yet.
My Dad's a birder, and he was always fond of the little juncoes each winter when we were growing up. They are cute little guys. Hardy, too, apparently. I'm glad I found your blog!
We always have several males that hang out in our backyard for the winter. My husband didn't quite understand my excitement when I spotted the first one on Thanksgiving this year. Winter has arrived in Wisconsin once those guys show up!
Our Juncos are much different. A few months ago we were birding in the Santa Cruz mountains and I saw the first ever one like yours. Thrilling!
