This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

amaryllis bulbs sprouting in a south facing window
I bought 5 really nice looking amaryllis bulbs a few weeks ago, mail order from Sheepers. It was a good price for 5 big bulbs, unlabeled - so I don't know which is which. I think a couple are not going to make it :-( But one or two are sprouting well in my south facing window. Not the best success rate, but I will wait a while longer and maybe more will come along.

The Amaryllis is such a beautiful flower. I used to buy one for my Grandmother every year until she passed away at age 102. They will always remind me of her. Thanks for sparking a wonderful memory.
Hi, they emerge from the soil with such strength. Had a gift of a fabulous four trumpeter last year hope it comes again this year. Along with Daffodils I feel they Herald in the new year and Spring to follow!

Don't count them out too soon ... Some wait til Easter to come out. Consider yourself lucky that this one is coming out for Christmas
I am so glad to see your note Leslie! The rest of mine do look fine. They are just slower. That early one is in full bloom today and I will post photos soon.
There is a shop down the road with 3 or 4 planters in their windows with 5 amaryllis bulbs in each. (Trapelo and Common intersection in Belmont) They display them every year. Their bulbs are looking like my slow ones. In a month or so they will be beautiful!
I am glad to have a Christmas one!
