This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

sweet potato vines
My sweet potatoes seem to be doing very well. I bet they'll exceed their plot - which I always enjoy. Maybe they'll grow up the popcorn stalks or weave through the old broccoli plants. We'll see.
This is our second year actually growing sweet potatoes. We can't purchase slips here in California and I've never had any luck producing my own, so I just keep the potatoes in a warm dark place until they start to sprout and then put them in the ground. This year we put ours in wine barrels. We'll see how they do. So far so good though.
Sweet potatoes have probably my favorite foliage of all vegetables- they are so lush and green, and I just LOVE the shape of their leaves. Even if the vine isn't super productive, at least you'll have a nice groundcover!
(And the little word Captcha I just had to type in was "plente!" How apt!)
Last year I had 2 tiny little vines and got 2 quite big sweet potatoes each, so I am looking forward to good production this year. I think sweets are one of the few vegetables OK in shade, so I am curious to see if they like growing up under the corn stalks.
I grew sweet potatoes a couple of years ago. They need as long a season as you can possibly give them..right up till before the first frost. In temperate climates they just keep growing right through Winter...I wish!

Don't you know that you can make a very delicious sweet potato tops salad with their leaves. It is very healthy, you'll love it.
