This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.
I am growing onions for the first time this year. Have you grown them in the past? Did you have success? I am looking forward to trying them. I planted my seeds last week and they are about 1/2 - 1" tall now. Exciting! Get's us northerners though the final weeks of winter. :) Happy planting! -Sandy
These are leftover seeds from packages I 'grew' last year. They sprouted well and grew to an inch tall, then shriveled up and died. I don't know why. Here's a picture.
But, with gardener optimism, I think this year will be different and I'll grow beautiful onions. Please give me advice if you can.
I think I didn't give them enough light last year. Maybe to warm too? I also started them too late.
It may have been damping off that killed your onions last season. If it looked like they had been pinched off at the soil line that is what caused it. It is a fungal disease which happens in moist environments.
You can pick up a product called "No Damp" and water with it to prevent damping off. I usually use it once or twice just as a preventative measure. Speaking of which, I need to get some.

I just looked up your onion varieties on your seed list. You are growing some really interesting onions this season, lots of variety.
Those onions should sprout pretty fast, my yellow onions started to germinate in 4 days and the shallots in about 6 days.
