Brussels sprouts

B sprouts IMG_2884b

I ended up with a nice pile of Brussels sprouts. Just over a pound, 5 cups. They taste really really delicious raw! Mild. Like sweet tender broccoli. I think the many nights of hard freezes sweetened them up perfectly. Now I need to find a recipe for roasting them. Since they taste so good raw, I think a simple recipe will work fine.

Its my first year of growing Brussels sprouts that have matured. I've tried 4 or 5 years now. For me, the trick was to start the seeds in May, use lots of composted manure, and grow the plants in full sun. It's a long process.

Thanksgiving brussels sprout harvest

brussels sprouts 020

For Thanksgiving, I harvested my first ever crop of Brussels sprouts. They were tiny, the size of marbles. And not very many of them. We added some store bought sprouts and my sister made a nice dish of them for our feast day.

I am growing Brussels sprouts for the first time. Maybe I planted too late. Maybe not .... My sister has a recipe that she would like to make us for Thanksgiving. I am hoping these will keep growing and give us a nice harvest by Nov 22 - 4 weeks away.

fall seedlings

store-bought fall seedlings Over the weekend, I found some fall seedlings at a local nursery (Mahoney's in Winchester MA) and bought a bunch for me and my parents. Six-packs of spinach, escarole frisee, and red leaf lettuce. Also a couple plants each of Brussel's sprouts and parsley. And one pretty sage plant with big round leaves for my mom. They are all happily in the ground now.

brussels sprouts photos

I found some Brussels sprouts to photograph at the community gardens today. They're mostly picked clean. But a few small ones are left on some of the stalks.

brussels sprouts

I finally got my courage up to try Brussels sprouts. As a child - I DID NOT like them, but Eastern Standard (Boston MA) has a delicious recipe with bacon that I loved!! I've never grown Brussels sprouts, but this could be a good new vegetable to try next year.

Brussels sprouts and and kale are about all that's left in the gardens here now. Maybe I can get a photo to add here tomorrow.
