This winter I haven't been feeding the birds and have been seeing very different types in my yard. Many predators. At the community plots there are song sparrows and red tailed hawks. At home, Carolina wren juncos, house sparrows, chickadees, nuthatches, and Cooper's Hawks.

Ooo! I love birds of prey. We have a pair of wedge tail eagles that soar over the valley. Their flight is so effortless. The other day I noticed there were three. So I think they had a chick and it fledged.
Wow, great stuff. That first shot is out of control: was there any telephoto/tripod action involved?
First shot is a Cooper's hawk sitting about 10 feet from me. Almost too close for the 55-250mm zoom I had on my camera. I've been told these hawks will sometimes do that and and stay put as people pass close by. They watch for critters flushed by the person walking by. He didn't watch me or Skippy as we passed, but kept his eyes peeled on the ground nearby as I shot photos.
Just after we passed him on the trail, Skippy and I flushed a white tailed deer - a bit too big for prey for that hawk!
We were hoping to spot the coyotes that have been spotted recently in the area we were walking. But we didn't see them. It was disk and we had to turn around as it was getting too dark.
The trail is at Alewife Reservation, right near the Alewife T stop. A little piece of wild land in the middle of heavy industrial and residential development.
My father-in-law calls misc. brown birds "LBJ's" (Little Brown Jobs)

We've been feeding birds heavy since it is colder here in NC than it has been in many years. Today I saw a bluebird sitting on the feeder perch which is unheard of. I have never ever seen them at the feeders although they nest all around the farm. Your pics are great! I, of course, did not have a camera near to prove he was there :(

Ohhhhhh... they're so beautiful and a bit frightening at the same time. They look like tough little guys, that's for sure.
