This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

ornamental cabbage
I have a bunch of ornamental cabbages in the front yard that have been getting compliments from the neighbors. They're very colorful now. There are a few compact heads I planted a couple months ago and a few big loose plants with many branching "heads" that I left in the ground since last fall. They were pretty all summer, with lots of delicate yellow flowers.
I'm trying to think of other vegetables to grow in the front yard. Vegetables are so much more interesting than shrubs and flowers. Lead levels are too high for edibles. I'm thinking of a giant pumpkin maybe and letting it run all over the grass.
