dahlia

dahlia
This is my favorite dahlia. A big soft orange one that my Dad started many years ago. The flowers are about 6 inches in diameter. Its a large vigorous plant that overwinters well. I have a clump taller than me next to my vegetable garden. The flower here is one of my Dad's.

  3. Its not really a secret. Its just a good variety, I think. I dig it after the first light frost and put it in a bag and hang it from the rafters in the basement. The hardest part is in the spring, when I try to find where I put it.

Neither my Dad nor I have been very successful with any other dahlias we've tried. My guess is the most important thing is good rich soil during the growing season.

If you'd like some of it, I'm glad to share. Any time after the first frost (middle of October?) I can give you some. You can email me at carletongardener@aol.com, which check occasionally, and we could arrange something, since your almost a neighbor.
