This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

"the best way to get real enjoyment out of a garden.."

I just love this quote that was in Dave's Garden newsletter today.

The best way to get real enjoyment out of a garden is to put on a wide straw hat, dress in thin, loose fitting clothes, hold a trowel in one hand and a cool drink in the other, and tell the man where to dig. -- Charles Barr
Ah, gardening.

I guess my wife is much better at gardening than I had given her credit for. She uses this method very effectively.

I think there are many ways to enjoy a garden. This one really struck me as funny - just to imagine it makes me laugh.

Yes, it's funny because it's so different from what I would do.... That's it. I would put the drink down and dig. Knees in the dirt and all. But I like the hat and the dress. I think I'd bring a chair for the man and a drink for him too.
