This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

germination test of old corn seeds
I'm doing a germination test of my old corn seeds. They were "Packed for 2009" - 6 years old. Any bets on whether they'll sprout?
To do germination test, I put 8 or 10 seeds of each variety on a damp paper towel and covered them with a damp paper towel. I kept the towels damp for a week and checked the seeds for sprouting often. I never saw any signs of sprouting. So I threw out all the seeds. I'll buy fresh popcorn seeds.

Interested to see how your test goes. I am winter sowing some 5 year old sweet corn to see how it goes...
ReplyDeleteI've read that corn seed is short lived, 1 or 2 years, so I'm not optimistic.
