peas planted!

Thursday, April 26, 2012

I finished off my indoor spring seed planting yesterday with a few pots of zucchini, yellow squash, pumpkins, butternut and buttercup squash. I also put in a couple extra pots of basil. My cukes and watermelons have sprouted and are working on their second leaves. All that left for seeds now is  to remember to plant more lettuce every couple weeks. And maybe a second crop of spinach too. The bean seeds go directly in the garden and I don;t plant to put these in for a couple more weeks.

  1. Hi! I like your garden very much! I'm going to read your notes, I think I can learn from you a lot. I'm a beginner gardener and I've just created my first blog :)Best regards!

  2. So interesting to read the various stages that gardens are in. Here in Texas, my beans are already knee high and all the squash, cukes, melons, etc were direct sowed 2-4 weeks ago.

  7. Kathy, your garden is beautiful. I've grown flowers for years, but I've always had a swing set and kids everywhere so I didn't do too much. Last year I had the swing set pulled out, sent my oldest daughter to college, and began reworking my yard, smothering the grass, and laying out new beds. It's so fun; every day is something new to see. I can't wait to get home from work each day to see what's happened. We are even calling the backyard "the garden" now. This spring I've added a few vegetables that I hope are idiot-proof; we'll see! Thanks for your posts; your garden is really true inspiration!

  8. I must get down to sow some more seeds soon. Trouble is I would have to use a boat to get there at the moment! Rain Rain Rain! Love to Skippy xx

  9. When are you planning to transplant your squash to the garden? I started my squash indoor 10 days ago and it is getting really huge already.. I was thinking May 15th- or do you think that they will be too root bound by then? This is the first time that I haven't directly sown into the ground.. and I'm kinda regretting putting them into pots because of how quickly they are growing.

  10. Michelle, In Topsfield I think you should wait a couple weeks (til at least May 15) to put out squash. Just transplant your seedlings to bigger pots indoors and give as much light as you can. It is 49*F out there and too cold for squash right now. I planted mine a week ago too and they are growing well. I have some larger pots saved and waiting in case they need them.
