This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

first pumpkin
Is there a good way to know when pumpkins are ready to pick? I usually pick when they are deep orange or the stem is hardened.
My father nor I have grown pumpkins yet. May I ask how long it takes for one to grow such as the one in the picture? Thanks for the tip on picking pumpkins.
The critters ate all of ours before they could ripen, so I'm a bit jealous. It's the first year they went after our pumpkins, but then again, they ate just about the entire garden this year.
It probably would have been better to make sacks out of light row cover and tied them loosely around the apples. If you use plastic bags again use a pin to punch a series of small holes to allow for some air circulation.

Well, I think this pretty much confirms I don't have a prayer for this years pumpkins! LOL MIne are still 3" high seedlings. Oh no!
ReplyDelete3 inch seedlings is kind of small for late Aug.... BUT - there is always next year!!

ReplyDeleteI ONCE OVER MANURED IT AND ONLY GOT BIG LEAVES AND PRETTTY BIG FLOWERS . NO PUMPKIN

ReplyDeleteYes, if the stem is all dried out, it's ready. The plant knows it's ready and stops investing (probably means seeds are fully developed).

What a lovely pumpkin you have there. Unfortunately I did not plant any this last season due to poor results last year.
