This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.
Your vegetables look wonderful. I love red potatoes. The little yellow cucumber looks like the lemon cukes I grew last year. They were delicious and none of them bitter.
What a lovely photo. I usually just lurk on your site for inspiration in my garden but I felt compelled to tell you how much I loved this photo. Making me hungry :) Wish I would of planted some squash now...
Nice photo. I've just harvested potatoes, swiss chard, turnip and 3 types of lettuce. We made a lasagna and salad - don't you just love this healthy way of cooking!
The pale cucumber is a North Carolina pickling cucumber - seeds from Sand Hill Preservation Center. Its a wonderful variety. Very prolific, always my first cuke and my biggest producer. The fruits a lovely chartreuse color inside and the pale color makes them easy to spot against the green leaves.
Why are the potatoes early? I looked back at my first harvests and I can;t say this is any earlier than normal. I usually start digging potatoes in early/mid July. Once the plants are full grown and start falling over, about 2-3 weeks after they finish blooming, I usually start digging them as I need them. One plant at a time. I have a super bed full of giant potato plants this year. The spring was cool and lots of rain as they like, now hot hot. The potato bugs were bad for a couple weeks, but have disappeared now. - I think I'll go dig a few more for dinner tomorrow! Yummy.
What a beautiful collection of colorful and unique shaped veggies! I recognize them all except for one, what is that delightful little creature that looks like it is wearing a crown? It is just beautiful!
Beautiful group! We'll be getting our first pan patty of the season in a couple of days so it's exciting to see some showing up in other harvests.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a yellow squash but paint on some eyes and stick on a few legs and you've got a beautiful swan.
ReplyDeleteis that a Boothby's Blonde cucumber?
ReplyDeleteLovely photo! What a wonderful time of year in the veggie garden. I love that patty pan squash!
ReplyDeleteI love harvest from the garden. I too am curious to know if you have a cucumber there?

ReplyDeleteWhat a fresh-looking crop! Am intrigued by that fruit/veggie next to the crookneck - what is it? I like growing stuff I can't find from the shops.
ReplyDeleteYes! A crookneck yellow swan. I love it!
