This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

mail ordered seeds
Here are seeds from my last mail order. I am trying seeds from an Asian seed catalog for the first time: Kitazawa. They look really interesting!
Also a bunch here from an old favorite: Botanical Interests. I love their plant drawings. I was pleased to spot their Komen for the Cure seeds - Celebration in Pink cosmos. An over-sized package with a donation to breast cancer research. I bought extra so I can share, since bc research is my profession.
I love BI, have had great success with all of their seeds--except the cosmos (not that one). I think I was putting it in too-rich soil, as I got lovely greenery.
ReplyDeleteIt has returned to dreary cold misery in the mid-Atlantic, so it's nice to look at cheerful seed packets!
Kitazawa has neat stuff, i have gotten their catalog for a number of years and often wanted to order something.
ReplyDeleteI bet those cosmos will be a beautiful mix. I love cosmos.
BTW, how much snow is your area expecting for Friday and what preparations will you be taking if any?
In my area of southeastern Maine we are told anywhere from 6 to 12 inches- unless it rains instead. I am hoping for rain!
I love discoveriing new gardening sites, thanks for sharing the names of these two seed distibutors whom I've never heard of before. And THANKS for your work in BC research.
ReplyDelete'hugs from afar'
I just heard we are "probably" getting 1.7 inches of snow. I only have plants in my cold frame so far and it can handle snow fine. I will probably put the tarp over the top to protect the plastic, just in case we get we get more, or any heavy ice. More importantly, I will make sure I have sufficient martini supplies.
ReplyDeleteI've had good results with BI as well. They were the only non-Burpee seeds I could find locally until I discovered a nearby nursery carrying Seed Savers.
ReplyDeleteHaving a splash of colors in the garden area can be simply done by choosing native flowering plants but blossom different colors.
ReplyDeletehello, i've been a fan for over 3 yrs now and love your blod. There is a great deal at Seed of Change that I thought your readers and all gardeners would want to check out.
ReplyDeleteSeeds of Change is offering 25 packets of ORGANIC seeds for only $4.99 shipped! Or, if you have an organization you can get 100 packets of seeds for only $14.99 shipped! They are running this promotion until they have sent out 100 million seeds. The offer is open until December 2011. To get started head over to seeds of change and fill in your information and submit a short story of how you plan to use the seeds. I ordered mine today.
Thanks for the note about the seeds at Seeds of Change. I just checked their site and they say they gave away all 100 M seeds in less than 2 days and aren't doing this any more :-( Too bad - our gardeners always love free seeds and I forgot to get any this year for our Spring Work Day next Saturday.
