This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

catalogs
I'm trying to limit myself to just a few more packets of seeds. I placed an order from Johnny's yesterday. Carrots, squash, parsnips, etc. And I've circled a bunch of things from the Kitazawa catalog. So many seeds, so little space.... My son has been asking me several times now to please grow popcorn again this year. How can I refuse? He says it tastes much better than anything we've been able to buy. He's a real connoisseur! I don't know where I will find space - popcorn needs at least 4 x 4 feet. I'll have to look at my garden diagram again and see what I can leave out. I shouldn't buy any more seeds.
Jealous you can order from Kitazawa ... they don't ship to Canada :( What've you got circled from them?
ReplyDeleteAh, but so much in that Kitazawa catalogue sounds so amazing! Good luck saying no!
ReplyDeleteLet's see, what's circled in my Kitazawa catalog?
ReplyDeleteTankuro Edamame,
Orient Wonder yard long beans,
Kyoto red carrots,
Green Lance hybrid Chinese broccoli,
Mini kisaku 50 hybrid Chinese cabbage,
Sooyow nishiki cucumber
Kamo eggplant,
Tiger hybrid eggplant,
Dwarf pak choi 4" hybrid.
Less than 10 things. Maybe I will go ahead.
I do need to order a few seed potatoes. I should do that soon so I get the varieties I want. I think 3 varieties will be good this year. I have 5 two years ago and 4 last year. I think a Russet, a red, and something else (blue?).
ReplyDeleteOrder the seeds......you wouldn't want to regret what you didn't grow, now would you?
ReplyDeleteThere's ALWAYS room for ONE more thing........
:)
Order the seeds, they will keep until next year if you run out of room! ;)
ReplyDeleteSeed catalogs are so dangerous! Glad I'm not the only one with eyes bigger than the space I have available. Makes me want to leave the city and go buy acres and acres and just have a giant garden.
ReplyDeleteGreat help you all are in keeping my seed collection under control!
ReplyDeleteA very difficult thing, limiting one's seed purchases. They are such small packets packed with so much hope and promise and impending excitement. =)
ReplyDeleteI'm trying potatoes for the first time this year. I've decided to do a vertical planting. Have you used this method?
ReplyDeleteI am working on trying to grow seeds cooperatively with gardeners I know in the local area. Central MA. Anyone have experience w/ this?
ReplyDeleteI love your garden....

I do not have space to grow popcorn but I remember planting it with my dad growing up. Your son is right. I still remember that as the best popcorn ever!
