a little bit of snow

A little bit more snow on the garden. The gnome is working hard. Its sunny today, so I will go out soon, shake the snow off the cold frame cover and pull it back. I'm going to harvest the Christmas lettuce, too.

  1. The gnome looks like he could be related to santa! Just found your blog and getting in vegetable gardening myself. Do you use the cold frame ALL winter?

  3. Hi Mario,
Its my first year with a cold frame so I'm also wondering how long I can use it. I'm guessing it will freeze up at some point (since I still have no heat in it). The temps go into the teens here usually for at least a couple weeks in Jan/Feb and I can't imagine it won't freeze then. But, I'm hoping it will be active again in late Feb/March. I'm planning to start seeds a month early inside this year (January/soon!) for planting out into the frame.

    Donald,
The dinner menu sounds super! I am looking forward to a whole week off and eating and relaxing.

Our Christmas menu is pizza and fresh green salad! (Non traditional!) I have homegrown tomato sauce (stored frozen), one or two last homegrown onions, dried chili peppers, garlic. We'll dust the snow off the grill and cook it outside. Its still one of our favorite menus. The green salad will be freshly harvested from my cold frame. Maybe we'll add a Meyer's Lemon martini with that.

Sunday we'll be more traditional - leg of lamb with pureed squash and sweet potatoes, and more green salad. We are planning to splurge with a very nice Cab. Ahhh.

    Happy celebrations!

  4. Sounds delicious. Never grilled a pizza before. We are having whatever grandma cooks! I love your gnome. He looks like a hard worker!
