wind-ripped cold frame

ripped cold frame 2 ripped cold frame

We had a serious wind storm the other night. I believe it was the remnants of a hurricane, though I don't know which one. Lots of rain and wind. Its the first time I have had damage done to my cold frame. The plastic sides were ripped open. Fortunately, plastic panels are easy to fix. We'll staple on fresh sheets soon.

  1. The plastic degrades quickly from the UV exposure and becomes brittle and vulnerable to that kind of damage. If you can find some scraps or small pieces of greenhouse plastic it will last a lot longer.

  2. Oh no! Sorry to read that the plastic was torn. At least it's not too hard to fix.

  3. What kind of plastic is this? Well, rather, what was it branded as, sold for? Curious, because I'm just about to cover mine as well..

  4. We are using 6 mm greenhouse plastic on our hoophouse.

But somebody recommended that we use 10 mm green house plastic to last through the harsh Canadian winter.

    We are planning on gambling.

  5. Thanks for the suggestions about greenhouse plastic. I had no idea there was something special for this!

The plastic we used is just plain old heavy duty plastic sold at Home Depot for general use. I can;t find a label anymore, but my guess is 4 mil Husky clear polyethylene sheeting.

We put this on in early spring and will replace it this weekend with the same type again. Its not like its a big hoop house that's hard to replace the plastic. So we'll give it a try again with the same and see how it goes. It'll be our first winter with a plastic cold frame.

Being right next to the house and way down here in Massachusetts (no Canadian winters!) it may be fine. We'll gamble too.
