This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

pea planting day
Happy St Patrick's Day! Its a beautiful sunny day - perfect to plant the peas! And some fava beans. I have my seed packages out. And the inoculant.
I'll also spread some clover seed in the squash and corn beds to see if I can get any cover crop growth to turn under before planting these beds in late May.
Ugh!
ReplyDeleteYou people with blooms already are killing me. I still have about two weeks before the crocus and assorted bulbs do anything in my garden.
Beautiful job on the bee pic.
Good luck with the broad beans! I have all my cool season legumes going in on the 25th. The weather has been so nice I might get them started sooner though.
ReplyDeleteHave you had any problems with birds eating pea seeds and new sprouts? I planted a couple hundred seeds 2 weeks ago, went out to the garden to see how well they were coming up and 20-30 pea sprouts were pulled out of the ground with no green leaves left on them! Never have had birds do this before, must need a net. Already placed my rabbit fencing around the beds so it had to be the two-legged kind. I am the one that was experimenting with digging a 4" trench in the fall, then filling in with compost this early spring to get a couple of weeks head start on the normal planting time in Indiana (last week in March) in order to start my beans on time using the same raised garden bed in May. So far half of the seeds have come up (may be some seed rot due to cold and a lot of rain lately). Will let you know how the experiment turns out, in gardening it never hurts to try new things out!
