This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.
I was reading up about your honey CSA plans. How have things progressed? Will it be happening? can you tell me about the structure/ price for the CSA?
I'd appreciate any info you can share with me. I am considering setting up a beekeeping CSA in my neck of the woods and I'm curious about what others are up to.
Great photos, Kathy. Love the birdhouse and birdbath! We have a birdbath as well. Not much use for them right now as we have snow in CT too! Since it's too cold to garden and nurture plants, I'm nurturing the birds. Our finches, cardinal, and a bluejay are enjoying the sunflower seed birdfeeders tremendously. I love watching them out the breakfeast nook window and daydreaming about what the snowcovered garden beds beneath will look like in spring and summer. I'd like to get some birdhouses like the one you have for next fall/winter. Our neighbors shelter them in their birdhouses for now.
I'm assuming they are wintering in these. Maybe I'm wrong? From early morning until about mid afternoon I see the birds go in and out of these wooden bird houses that hang from my neighbor's trellis. It's covered in bare grapevines and good for summer shade when leaves are on the vines. The trellis is also attached to the south side of their garage, perfectly sheltered from the north wind. I assumed the birds wintered in these because I see them go in and out, but maybe not? There are a pair of cardinals, many tufted titmouse, and purple and yellow finches. This is a Connecticut garden and although it's snowy right now, like your pictures, the temperatures are probably not as cold as in the Boston area. If they don't winter in these are they just checking them out for summer or stopping in for a break?
What a snowfall!!! How many inches did you get? What is the temperature? Looks like you are having a real old-fashioned winter.

ReplyDeleteI've never seen birds go in the bird houses any time of year but the spring. DO they use these as winter shelters?
