This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

a purple pea!
The purple podded Capucijner peas are starting to make pods.
These are soup peas. I've never grown them before. I will let them dry on the plant then shell them and use them in soup. They are supposed to taste delicious. The peas range in color from gray to reddish to purple. I don;t know what color they are after they're cooked.
Have you seen that Ottawa Hortiphilia (http://ottawahortiphilia.blogspot.com/) also just posted about this pea?
If the variety you have is the same as what I grow here, it is a little bit of a gene-pool mix, meaning all the plants will vary a bit. In particular, you may notice about 10% of the pods may be white (or greenish).
Lovely looking pea!! Hope it tastes as good as it looks.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, does it keep the color after cooking?

Thanks for the link to Ottawa Hort's Capucijner pea post. I have added it somewhere down on my sidebar so I can find it again later.
ReplyDeleteI have only deep purple pea pods so far. Maybe about 25 pods are out there and many blossoms.
