This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, chickens, and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

my first seedling!!!
It's a little onion sprout. Variety: Red Wing. Actually there are two of them. I feel like a new parent.
It's great isn't it, when I walk out of the kitchen and pass by my seed trays I say "Come on everyone, up you come"! When they pop up they get a "hooray"! Marian (LondonUK)
Hi Kathy - I live in Attleboro and, like you, am waist deep in snow at the moment. I wonder if you have a plan to deal with all this - I am worried that I will not be able to get to my garden to plant early crops (like peas). Are you going to delay your planting at all?
Ha! Maybe it is time to worry. St Patrick's Day aka Pea Planting Day is next weekend.
I remember two years ago we had nice weather and the ground was exposed and thawed in early March then it snowed a lot (by pre-2015 standards). I dug the snow under and planted the peas finally on March 25. The did fine. (I learned not to turn snow under, better to scrap it aside, then turn soil. When the snow melts it makes big holes in the soil.)
I wonder if I should shovel off my garden? My shoveled driveway is nice and clear.
I'm not delaying any planting. Except the first outdoor crops, peas, arugula, fava beans. And they are always a very iffy , flexible date, "as soon as the soil is workable" after 6-7 weeks before the last frost.
But I think I will go shovel a bed out today and see if that helps. I'll need to wear snow shoes to get there....
Very adventurous of you! I think I'll just wait and see how much melt we get over the next couple of weeks. Peas may just have to wait until April to go in. I still need to get out to prune my peach tree though...can I borrow your snowshoes!? :)

Yes. Hooray for those seedlings! I have three of four varieties of onions up now. Hooray!
